Live to work, work to live?

I am warming up the engine again.

How does it feel like to go into an office as a temp and not feel the burden of a manager weighing now on you?

How does it feel to go to work as a F&B service crew, not having to sit on the desk and strain your neck at the screen for hours, but just giving free smiles and serving people with enthusiasm?

How does it feel to be able to work from home, get some income with a couple of hours of work and being able to go to a pool on a weekday?

All these, I will start to miss them.

If life can be reprogrammed, I would like everyone in the world to have equal treatment, same pay same level of education. Of course, the rest of the things can differ, families, friends and the way you grow up. But because of the differences in the world, the rich and the poor, and the average people like me, we are neither moving up or down because we can't this life unless you get really lucky. We are stuck. We live to pay bills. If you are lucky and don't have a lot of financial obligation, you probably get to work for your passion, but unfortunately life is seldom fair.

Worst hair salon ever

The grand award goes to Kiseki Hair House. They claimed to have two branches, one at Tanjong Pagar and the other at Boon Keng. At my last visit, the shampoo girl said they have two more outlets under a different naming.

Update: BEWARE! They have renamed themselves as Rebornz Hair @ Work or similarly Rebornz Hair@Work! They also have new deals e.g. this.

The deal I regretted buying
I really regretted buying the deal from deal.com.sg (shown above) in June 2013, so much so that I haven't bought any of the services again from such sites. A past experience with a manicure deal also scarred me. In fact, I will rather pay more for a reputable place next time. It was S$8 for the hair cut. In fact, they advertised to have stylists from Hong Kong, but from my experience, they do speak Cantonese but they are all Malaysians! So let me describe my ordeal to you:

First cut in July 2013 @ Tanjong Pagar
I was served by a slightly plump lady named Catty. She was really good with the scissors and her mouth was exactly sharp like one. My hair was shampooed by another young girl whom seemed like a trainee. The whole cut took me 1.5 hours with the trainee and Catty taking turns to blow my hair. This already smelled of a disaster, two stylists trying to style my hair differently. But Catty took over and then she pressured me into buying a package. It was S$75 for another 5 sessions of hair cut after failing to sell me 10 or 20 sessions. She said there wouldn't be a deadline to use up those sessions but how would I know if they would close within the next month (it was worrying after the first session). And her face was black like coal after managing to convince me to get the 5 sessions. What bad customer service! I didn't know how but it just sounded so much like a guilt-trap and she was good at it. I never again saw her at any of my subsequent visits, so I really reckon she's either one of the bosses or she has left.
(Anyway, at S$15, I assure you can easily find a better haircut at other neighbourhood salon or an opening promotion in a BETTER salon in a mall.)

Second cut in August 2013 @ Boon Keng
So the dear Catty called and said Tanjong Pagar outlet had been really "busy" and recommended me to try my next session at Boon Keng outlet, boasting its bigger space and more number of stylists. In fact, I think the Boon Keng outlet was so new and the stylists were even "newer" that nobody really patronised the place. I booked for 3 sessions, bringing a friend and sister along. It also helped me to get rid of that package sooner before they "disappear" one day. Bad decision. In fact, I felt bad now for bringing others there. There wasn't any upselling but the staff barely knew what was going on. When I quoted the package I bought, they had no idea and had to phone the other outlet a couple of times to get things straight. Then I also didn't have to verify my identity! The stylists were all well-dressed in black blazers and pants, but their skills were mediocre. My sister was the first to get a cut. After a while, she was done and when I looked at her, I commented,"Did you have the cut? Why does it still look the same?!" It was then, the stylist began to rework on it and then we had a slightly more satisfactory result. Then she did mine, I told her exactly what I wanted, which was only a trim so it was easy. This lady stylist who did both mine and my sister's hair is not as "professional" as Catty, but she was friendly and eager to learn or please. She's slim, with long kinda dyed dark blonde hair (I can't remember her name but she was at Tanjong Pagar branch on my last visit). But for my friend, a bloke did her hair, as she had a shampoo before she came, she did without one. But the bloke barely touched her hair, she wanted to trim the dead ends and fringe but he must be a newbie, he didn't even feel brave enough to cut much for her. It was a complete disaster at Boon Keng and I swore never to come back to this outlet again.

Third cut in October 2013 @ Tanjong Pagar
So I came back again for yet another trim just a day before I attended a wedding. I tried to restore some faith in the Tanjong Pagar branch. None of the stylists I knew was around and so a pretty baby-faced guy named Eddy attended to me. I think this is one of the best things that happened throughout this ordeal! Eddy! IF YOU HAVE BEEN COAXED TO SIGN UP A PACKAGE HERE, ASK FOR EDDY AS YOUR STYLIST. I can assure you even though he's young, his personable character and genuineness is a rarity in this salon. He seemed new from the way he was shampooing my hair, he didn't use the tips of his fingers and he knocked me a couple of times with the hairdryer! Like I said, a trim was a trim, so it wasn't too difficult. He commented about my hair loss but didn't push me for any treatment (knowing that I'm unemployed). But besides that, he did a better job, I received a compliment on my hair right after the hair cut when I met my friend. He also tried to make conversations, well, I thought he was just trying to impress since that was the first time I met him. But when I came back again, he did remember me and what we last chatted! Eddy, thanks for the 'friendship'!

Fourth and last cut in December 2013 @ Tanjong Pagar
I came back again, after I got a call from them. They seem to like to call every month to make you visit so they can make you buy more sessions again. I saw the stylist from Boon Keng, but Catty was never there. I was asked to move seats twice, not impressed. Then a shampoo lady whom was totally clueless about her job was tasked to wash my hair for me. She is the WORST shampoo lady ever. She did not ask about the temperature of the water and washed my hair with cold water until I commented that it was too cold. Then the water became so hot that I had to ask her to adjust. Then it was back to cold water. I bet this is her FIRST HAIRDRESSING JOB and PROBABLY FIRST DAY OF WORK even though she tried to convince me she was sent from another branch. Kiseki Hair House, your new shampoo aunt sucked big time! So initially a FAT bloke was assigned to do my hair but last minute he decided to take an old auntie as his customer... what f*cking service! Fortunately at that moment, Eddy was done with his customer and he saw me. His face immediately lit up and asked if I remembered him, of course I did, and so I was happy to have him do my hair instead. Fortunately, he didn't knock my head much this time round. I asked him for a new cut, shoulder length this time and shorter fringe. I noticed Eddy can be easily distracted, he looked around during the cut a lot when he heard people coming in or moving around. But other than that, I can feel he's learning and doing a pretty decent job than the other stylists, best of all, he doesn't push you to buy add-ons. He's also sympathetic and encouraging at the same time (as he remembers my unemployment). I told him I would go back to him when I find work. Sorry Eddy, if you move to a new salon, I will keep my promise. Because I will never go back to Kiseki Hair House ever, it's the worst hair salon (I pity those old aunties whom are not savvy enough to read reviews). Eddy, I sincerely hope you will find a better place to groom you!

Failed contest

One of those contests you really shouldn't bother taking part... Look at the results, the same names appeared time and time again (wonder if they did an honest audit)! Same surname, are they a family? It's okay not being a lucky winner, but they should play it fair.

I wrote them a feedback, but they took a while to reply and tried to brush me off by sending me some plastic folders (which I have trashed!). Not supporting your products anymore!

When is the time...

Last week was school holiday for kids in Singapore, and I felt like I was on one. It was a super unmotivating week for me. I did finish my travel stories nevertheless. I did complete my errands (phew). But for job search, there wasn't much going on. I lost my focus. I didn't know what I wanted anymore, temporary assignment or a real job? I was so tempted to take the first option but I knew that just wasn't my goal. I even lost that passion for reading which I had earlier. But I had been inspired by Nick Vujicic's videos. I'm not Christian but I do believe in a God and that it's universal. I also believe luck and timing play a huge role in everyone's life. We create our chances, yes, but without the right timing (i.e. luck), how could things happen? So God... tell me, give me a sign, let me know... please.

5.6.13

Happy times

June has sneaked here.

I have officially left work for 2 months and back from Japan for over a month. I am beginning to feel it (not that radiation rumour on Japan!) but the good luck that has accompanied me back!

At a recent contest, I won myself a new phone, just in time as M1 totally screwed up my plan. They have scrapped off the whole plan without notifying their loyal customers, including me. I was so pissed but now I know sometimes it's not worth being loyal to your service provider, I have seen too many cases. Unless you are a big corporate client, what's the deal of losing one customer? Especially someone without a premium plan. Thanks M1, I have seen your colors, you used to be much better than this. Anyway, I shall be terminating my plan and number with them and moved on to prepaid life. The life that probably suits me best.

Life is good so far. During the Japan trip and after, I have met a couple of people, some stayed as friends and some left. I can't complain about the lack of income because the time has been filled with eventful activities. Also thanks to some motivation, I have finally finished writing the America trip! Next, I shall continue the Japan stories. Stay tuned!

Why? Tell me why?

I'm having a bad day, or should I say I had. So serious that I didn't have the appetite for food, I only had a cup of yogurt and some chocolates. I'm afraid of this society, I'm sick of being in the rat race, I'm tired of competing against others, I have had enough. Living in a place like this, in the world today, I am easily not contented. I don't know why, perhaps I should just do something else, without the sake of earning money. People can volunteer and get paid nothing but still enjoy it. Why do people like us get paid, doing something not as enjoyable, and still do not get the desired happiness?

Perhaps The Red String Book has an answer.

p.s: Thanks Joy for getting a Kinder Joy to cheer me up. She knows I love Kinder Surprise but they are almost non-existent in Singapore now.

15.10.11

Is NO in your dictionary?

Thanks Yus for steering me back to the right track. I admit that my recent posts aren't probably the easiest to digest, probably due to the surroundings I'm living in. I just want to write one more ranting entry.

I really don't understand why I have such people around me... I'm normally pretty tolerant but too much is over the board. Is it hard to say NO? If yes, learn to say it because even a kid can say that. I sometimes prefer talking to my male friends because they are less wishy washy, more straight to the point.

Let me cite you some of the most ridiculous or very selfish examples:
"I can't hang out late tonight, because it's the hungry ghost festival right now." -- seriously will the ghost eat you up?

"Can we meet here because it's easy FOR ME to go home later?"
"Can we meet that day because everyone else is not free FOR ME that day?"
"I can't go out because my mum is asking me to do this... blah"

It is sometimes valid to say that, if someone else is not free for you, it is OK to arrange it with another person. But sometimes agreeing to someone and later coming up with stupid excuses is too much. Don't agree, if you don't have the intention to keep your words! Worse - if you always think you have a valid excuse and you're not in the wrong.

Would you die just admitting?
"Hey, that's a bit far for me!"
"I am lazy to go."
"I'm not in the socializing mood to hang out."
"I am busy."

Very simple, no?

If you know I'm talking about you, take note that honesty works with me. I will NOT cry just because you can't go, I'm asking you because I do feel like you would be a great company. If not, no big deal, and it pisses me off with your RUBBISH excuses.

22.9.11

No to nonsense

I feel powerful enough (or perhaps in control is a better word) to not take nonsense anymore. Has it got to do with age? I'm getting wiser and tougher, am I not!

I recently received very unflattering (well, I find them unflattering) comments from a friend. Instead of rectifying things, he made it worse. So I asked for an apology or he gets off my list. When I say things, I MEAN THEM! So off he goes. Some people really think I'm a softie because I don't look I am MEAN enough. So try it.

The recent Monday morning, my sister suddenly went crazy and vented her anger on a stool during breakfast. Then we reprimanded her and got swore back at. It fumed me, we never did anything to provoke her, yet she always vent her work frustration at home. She's an annoying b!tch and I really wonder why we are borned in the same family. I took up the stool and I swore I could have throw that in her face. That ruined the start of my week but it soon got to the back of my mind. I haven't been talking to her since Monday but she's trying to make peace now. I seriously can't be bothered because I don't know when's her next outburst. So let's see how well we do in Chiang Mai, it's a bit of a risk to do a trip with her honestly. The last Hong Kong trip is already hell at times.

Why is it always my friends are taking me for granted??? Say NO to being nice, say NO to yes. But I am not tolerating all the sh!t now. Do it with tact or get the F out of my life. One of my close friends (I don't feel that close anymore) always talk to me as if she's commanding me. She will text me "Call me" whenever she's back. The thing is she can call me, right? I don't mind but I just don't like the way she says it. Can't she be more polite? When she talks to me on the phone or MSN, she screams (yea, try imagining it on MSN). IT IS ANNOYING. So finally today, I replied her, if she can't ask me nicely to ring her, then she should be the one calling! So fine, she's pissed, but she needs to know that's what she deserves to get as a reply.

12.8.11

Lunch buddies

Why are there some people you never get sick of... while there are some you soon have enough of?

My longest record is the same lunch buddy for 20 months and not once was I ever sick of eating with him. Now I get put off eating with this colleague whom I often find annoying. Don't ask me why, but just her personality is a huge turn-off. I reckon one surely needs "chemistry" with a lunch buddy too. I only had lunch with her once a week for the recent two weeks and that was enough. I didn't enjoy it particularly and I think she's beginning to sense it for herself as well. She has began to make her own appointments with friends, I can't say how thrilled I am! She only talks about superficial stuff, mainly about her boyfriend. When she's out for lunch, she can actually "sms" me,"Can you help me buy fruits?" Do you think she's crippled or just lazy? She's out for lunch, can't she just get it herself? It's so annoying. When she has training till lunch time for a few days, she's expecting a slave to buy her lunch, can't she just buy some food before or after? She has often no opinion of what to eat, and would just buy what I'm eating 75% of the time. I don't like copy cats, at least not her. Today I'm out for lunch with the usual gang (including a new temp girl who seems to hit off with me), yet another favour from her to buy fruit juice... Seriously, I can't be bothered, if you're out to lunch, get it yourself, loser. She surely finds joy imposing on others and I find mine rejecting them!

Even at work, she would often bombard me with messages on the office IM, it's really annoying. Once I asked her if she was really free since she sent me so many messages. Guess what? Now she will "act busy" delaying her replies for hours, sometimes with silly messages. If only I can block people on the office IM, she'll be the first on the list.

God, can you please get rid of her? Have you not tested my patience enough??

2.8.11

Delete me please

缩头乌龟 means coward, it also literally means tortoise who hides its head in its shell.

And I am about to tell you I don't like them. If you are reading this, you better know I don't need these as my friends too. My friend whom I recently deleted used to do this, she often hinted on her Facebook status about her dissatisfaction with someone. Sometimes it was obvious she was talking about her husband, and other times, you went thinking,"Who are you talking about? Me?" I dislike guessing games, they are for KIDS. If she had a problem with the husband, why couldn't she talk to him instead of disgracing him in front of her friends? I don't understand. It only means she wanted attention. I am not criticizing her but I am using that as a good example of what I deem as a 缩头乌龟。If someone has something she/he's not happy about with me, I will be gald that to handle that upfront. Tarnishing someone behind their back is just cowardice. Or worse, in their presence to embarrass them? Is there something wrong with your communication skill or your personality?

What was the last thing my friend did to me before I deleted her? You don't have to guess it, she simply said something on her status to all her friends even though I know it was meant for me. So that was the last straw.

19.7.11

Getting older...

... and more intolerant towards

Inconsiderate people
Believe it or not, sometimes I feel like screaming at the people blocking the right side of the escalator in the MRT stations. I have done that before and I don't think it's healthy for myself, LOL. If only I have super power, I would burn their backside to make them run up.

People that talk with no common sense
People whom have brains but do not use it enough. Sometimes, I really feel irritated by such people, they tend to ask you silly questions even though they know you don't have the answer. E.g. When the lift is not working, they ask you,"So how uh?" How do I know how, do I look like I can fix the lift??

People whom are less intelligent or i.e. stupid (not the retarded or mentally challenged)
Sorry, I don't blame you for being this way but it just gets on my nerves.

Clingy people
Come on, I'm not your mama.

People whom like to show off
Both the local and the expats. The expats tend to like to show off when they have a nice car and a six figure salary on an expat package. They think all the girls will flock to them just because they have blue eyes and blond hair?! I don't mean all of them but you will see when you meet one. The locals whom feel they are superior than most just because they work in a "well known" company and have high ranking post or they have worked in Australia for 10 years or they think they are smarter than most. Prove it. I can also easily migrate to Australia and work there for 10 years at a super slack pace.

People who complain too much
Have you nothing better to do? I have almost no patience for them these days. If you just need a listening ear, that's fine. But if you go on for days and weeks, there is seriously something wrong with you, not your life. I can easily (very easily) find someone whose life is much worse and struggling for the simplicity of life than something so minor you're fussing over.

6.7.11

WEDS stands for Welcoming Endless Dog Shit

My nail polish hasn't arrived.

A crappy package known as "goodie bag" from Silk Air came but its all the useless stuff they dying to get rid of.

Big headache at work with Japan, can they give me less problem??

Annoying colleague kept sending me instant messages at work, I couldn't focus. I decided to keep her off with DND mode. She gave me :( when I told her I have my lunch appointments. Sorry, sad face won't work on me. Young lady, stop sticking to me like GLUE.

Boss hasn't said OK to my leave for my planned holiday.

Healthy food that tastes yucky ruined my day. I like Cedele, no more trying all the shit that everyone else been eating.

Listening to people talking in broken English (i.e Singlish) makes me want to leave this place more. I miss my dose of British accent, nothing comes close to it, not scottish accent.

I just want to sleep.

4.7.11

I want my ..eermm.. SPACE

Clingy people irk me. Sorry.

I don't like the feeling. It probably is a very common Asian trait, but not for me. I hate the idea that someone just constantly needs me, my attention or talks to me at every possible opportunity. This is also why I don't like to be on MSN often because I cannot stand constant messages from people, even though I like them. But I don't have to talk to them 24/7.

In the office, I recently have a new colleague whom I work quite closely with. I detest the idea that she thinks we will lunch all the time. Only when I tell her I have things lined up, would she then find other lunch buddies. I don't want anyone to stick to me daily for lunch! I don't want someone who constantly wants to go home or walk to the train station together. I like being alone, or at least, as often as I like to be. Ermmm, it's difficult to tell her, "Can you please have your own life outside mine?" I guess I just need to distance myself from her time to time ;)

18.4.11

Sonntag ist Scheiße!

What a rubbish Sunday!

I woke up this morning to catch Doraemon but the damned TV went fuzzy and I could only catch bits and pieces of it. Then I went back to bed and lazed the morning away. When noon came, I did my laundry. It actually gave me a sense of achievement when I was done. I hopped on to the lappy and did the usual surfing and the usual games... till I dozed off. Too much sleep is bad. I woke up with a headache and it hasn't worn out till now :( I feel a little pin on the side of my head, poking the inside. It's annoyingly stinging!

At least I had a great Saturday out, chilling and relaxing, did a lot of walking and eating. I shall share some food reviews again when I get some time.

I did my passport renewal online just now, I have been procrastinating for a while. Sister and dad have done theirs by post, so I decided to just get on with it. Else I won't be able to leave for Sydney in June if it comes true. It's hard to pick a photo for such things, and even harder when I have to change my identity card in near future (I haven't received the letter yet!), so please let me enjoy the last 6 months of my 20s!

Like I say, I still don't like April, it's just an uneasy month to go through.

13.4.11

When the shit hits the fan

Things are cropping up at work recently and it's bothering me. One of my team mates hasn't been very nice, like I said before, after I came back from the trip, he's like a changed person. Sometimes it just takes time to see the color, isn't it? I still harbour hope that he isn't such a meany all the time. Recently we have a repeating issue with one of the country websites, unfortunately I am the one working on those tasks. But it is something out of my control, the correct content was published but the incorrect one somehow got onto the site. It has happened for 3 times, the old content seemed to appear out of nowhere. As we are situated at different countries, we work on different servers and data needs to be replicated all the time and sometimes it doesn't do it correctly. But I am getting accused that I might have put the wrong things up which I didn't, I have email proof that it was proof-read before it was put up. Phew, everything is mandatory to be in black and white! He apologised today to me about the email he sent, so I got over it. Things should get better.

Fingers crossed.

7.2.11

Forgetful II

I can't believe it, again I forgot something. This time, my mobile phone! But actually I can survive more without a phone than a wallet, so that's a consolation. The only thing is I want to hook up so many lunch appointments after my trips, so it's quite bothering me today as I can't pre-arrange with friends. So people, get ready for lunch!

1.2.11

Forgetful I

Strangely, I managed to get to bed at 1am despite a long sleep on my flight back to Singapore. I'm adapting well ;) except for a head that probably hasn't quite woke up. 130pm, I am yawning. It must be about 530am there in UK right now.

This morning, I happily went to a cafe and ordered toast and eggs before I realised my wallet is not with me! It was embarrassing and I had to cancel it because I didn't have a cent on me to pay for it! I hope there's not a second time... And I had to borrow lunch money from colleague today. Argh.

Edited.

Kaoz, I actually forgot it's Tuesday, not Monday, damn.

8.11.10

Running low

Everything is stagnant. I dislike this feeling.

Can someone so restless like me get used to it? I guess not.

It's irritating. Anyone that says anything without going through their brain now annoys me too. I have ran out of patience. Like a stretched rubber band reaching its maximum stretch, go on and it will snap. I don't think you'll enjoy it when I snap. So it is best I just stay away from some human interaction and I will be fine tomorrow. It's just one of the days I get really frustrated with things happening around me. I think my stress therapy is eating fruits. I looked out of the window this morning and saw the cleaning workers clearing the chutes. It's a dirty job most people deem but they looked like they enjoyed what they did and they were doing a thorough job. We have to respect professions like these, the dirty jobs most of us are not doing are the reasons behind our clean living environment. It seems ridiculous that I get all bothered by things out of my control, I guess I need a rest. Tomorrow shall be a better start!

12.10.10

I don't need another mum

I am really beginning to get annoyed by my friend. She rang me up, screaming into my ears, asking me what time I woke up! Hello, I have an alarm, or even better a real mum. I don't need someone to report to on what time I slept, what time I woke up, what I am doing later, what I am doing tomorrow or the day after... Can some people please respect privacy and personal space?!! I don't want a friend who expects me to give in to her requests all the time, who wants me to say "YES", and wants my free time to be spent with her! I have plenty of better things to do and yes I don't mind sharing some with her but don't expect my lifestyle to be like hers (tai-tai). She has all the time in the world now and best of all is spending on her future husband's money! But I don't, I am not a tai-tai! I wish she sees it, can she stop living in her own world and trying putting her feet in someone's shoes????

9.9.10

Are you fit to be choosy?

I am really turned off by someone when he tells me after looking at a picture of the opposite sex, she isn't his type. Well, we all have choices and preferences, I respect that. But telling me that just by looking at a picture, that is just shallow. If you judge a person by a photo, you're merely telling me you've read a book by just reading the title or looking at its cover! No wonder he hasn't been able to find a girlfriend for years, the problem with him is he thinks too highly of himself and expects something that is beyond his capability. Sorry for the ranting, but that's very childish behaviour and I reckon he's better off buying a Vietnamese wife by choosing from the catalogue. I don't like to matchmake and it isn't really my forte. Sometimes my friends happened to get together because they hit it off well. And no, I don't allow people to pick from pictures like they are ordering food from a menu. Don't give me the BULLSHIT someone is or is not your type from a photo, because then you're bloody shallow. He even had the guts to tell me another friend is prettier but too bad, she's beyond what he's capable of providing just because I know my friend too well. So disappointed with the species of men these days... If you don't meet someone in reality, don't give me the crap of "your type", because a relationship is not based on "your ideal image of a maiden". I just wish I had the courage to tell him, "Look at yourself in the mirror and ask if you're capable to attract the type you're WISHING for!".
